Group Piano

What kind of piano do I need at home?
You will need either an acoustic or digital piano at home for practice.

How long is each class?
The duration of all classes is 60 minutes, except the Smart Starter A which is 45 minutes.

How many students are there in one class?
Our teachers believe that the smaller the class size, the better. We have a maximum number of six students in a class. Each student will have a digital piano in our keyboard laboratory. To ensure the best group dynamics, we require a minimum of four students before starting a class

How are students grouped?
We group students by age, ability and previous music background. If necessary, our skillful teacher will be able to move students from one group to another to meet individual needs.

What makes the group piano class at BTIM unique?
  • Our group size is smaller; each student will have more attention from his/her teacher.
  • While our courses are fun, the emphasis is on providing a strong foundation in musicianship which is valuable for further piano or instrument study.
  • All the teaching material is the most advanced group piano textbooks in the world.
  • In the middle of each term, every student will have a one-to-one lesson to ensure everyone is at the same level in the class.
  • New teaching format utilising new technology in our group classroom.

What role do parents need to play?
The parents are vital elements of successful group piano study for children. They are an extension of the teacher, the eyes and ears during the student’s daily practice. The task of parents, especially those of young students, is to encourage their child to repeat the previous lesson daily until the next lesson.

Is there a waiting list?
Normally, if you enrol a few weeks before the beginning of each term, you will have a place. But we can’t guarantee to offer you a suitable class if you enrol late. However, we always have new classes being generated and can put you on a waiting list until a class becomes viable.

Is my child ready?
Age: Children’s aptitude is malleable and even expandable though to the age of nine, at which point the window of opportunity begins to close. Thus early childhood is the prime time to study music. Most people classify the young learner as one who is from three to six years of age.
Attention Span: the young learner usually possesses a limited attention span. Indeed, attentiveness is often closely associated with age and gender. But a few months can make a world of difference in this regard. Through participating in a period of group study, the students should be able to develop the ability to concentrate for the given length of a lesson, as well as be able to focus for short periods of practice time at home.

How much do the materials cost?
The prices of the textbooks vary by levels. The range is from $40 to $60for the children’s courses. Each textbook can be used for 2 terms before they progress to next level. The adult's course textbook costs $60. This book can be used for 1 year.

Does my child need an interview?
If your child has had no or very little piano tuition before, an interview is not necessary. If your child has had more than six months piano study experience, a placement exam is needed to ensure the child is grouped in the right class.
